End Stage COPD

Posted in Group:

My father was diagnosed with "end-stage" copd 8 years ago. No one, including his doctors, expected him to live this long, but here we are.

It is now time to begin end of life care. I'm wondering if anyone out there can help me understand what to watch for and/or what the end will look like. I believe we are ready to call hospice to get my mother the help she needs in caring for him, but she refuses to accept that help. She believes it's not time yet.

Any advice and insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hello there,

First off, I have called on hospice with my father and my mother, both died of lung cancer and I can't express enough what a relief it is to have someone else in the drivers seat that knows exactlly what they are doing.

They provide a bathaide, medication management, a social worker to speak with and are on-call 24/7. The give out a wonderful booklelt that decribes exactly what to look for in the end stages of life, beginning with months out to days left. It describes all behaviors etc. You don't have to be apart of them to obtain this booklet, I am positive that they will give you one.

Your mom is fighting one of the most important tools she could ever hope for by not allowing them to come. They even have grief counseling for afterwards for the entire family if requested. You may want to visit your local office and ask them to give you suggestions on how to get your mom on board.

A doctor must let hospice know that he/she believes that your dad is "hospice appropriate" meaning six month or less to live BUT my mom lived for 1 year and two months and they kept recertifying her until the end.

I'll pray for you and your family. Let me know how you are doing.
Sincerely, Brokenlady
