New to group

Posted in Group:

Hello all,
This is my first post to this group. I cannot tell you how happy I am to have found this place. My husband is at the end stages of COPD and is getting more and more confused every day. He is a veteran and has the VA insurance, we have a palliative care team involved, but sometimes I don't think they help much. He continues to smoke, but follows the house rules of smoking outside most of the time. I have been a healthcare worker for 30+ years and recently chose to start my own elder care business at home. This helps because I am at home all of the time to be with my husband. I currently only have one patient in my home, he is a 59 year old quadriplegic. Up until a month ago I was a full time student as well. I was attending on-line classes and I was six months away from my PhD when my husbands behavioral changes forced me to quit school. I have my 15 year old granddaughter at home with me, she is home schooled by me, and she is a my savior with everything that is going on in my life. I currently do not have health insurance for myself because the cost is so high, so I cannot afford to see a therapist. My husband wanders all night long, sometimes it appears as though he is asleep while he is walking, some times he just stands there and bends down to the point where his hands are on the floor and I am so afraid he is going to fall, I know he is falling asleep when he does this, but he will not go to bed for any more than a few minutes. My granddaughter and I take turns watching him, and my son help a few nights a week when he is able to get home. He works across state. I am so tired, but I promised him I would never put him in a nursing home. The COPD is progressing quickly, his lung capacity is below 15% as of six months ago but he will not stop smoking. It is like watching him commit slow suicide. I just needed someone to talk to.

This must be extremely hard to watch as I agree it is like being forced to view someone commit suicide but having no means to stop it. I too am glad you found the site and please feel free to message me anytime you need someone to talk to.

Hugs-

My prayers are with you and your family.
I was just diagnosed with COPD at age 66, and I only smoked a little in my twenties but quit before I had my children. I have been doing aerobics, yoga and healthy eating religiously since 1973 when I had some anxiety issues. I am having a hard time accepting my diagnosis and I am thankful to have found this support group. God Bless You.
